My Japanese Collections - Temples and shrines

I've always loved collecting and sorting things. From a very young age I started collecting stamps, and I spent whole afternoons sorting them by country, by theme, and so on. Then I did the same with postcards, books, porcelain dogs, and so on.

With photos I do exactly the same thing: I classify them geographically and by subject. And maybe later they can be turned into books. These are my most outstanding collections.

Temples and shrines

They are a photographic icon par excellence of Japan. They’re an oasis of peace and silence in the middle of the city. They have the appeal of being well-cared-for, clean, with people constantly visiting them to ask the gods for wishes. All this makes them a very interesting place not only for architecture but also for seeing how believers, both Buddhists and Shintoists, act. We’ve devoted this year’s big calendar to the subject of temples.
