My first exhibition in Tokyo, with the support of Michael Harris, focused on the subject of the grandparents that I often came across on the street. I titled it in Japanese 老いること (pronounced oirukotó), which means more or less "Being Old". My mother was dying, in fact she died the week after the exhibition ended, and I discovered that exhibiting this subject related to her beautiful old age would help me to get over the grief I would feel a week later .
As always, the great problem that appears when you have to show your photos, either in an exhibition or posting them on social networks, is what to display, in black and white or colour, and in what format: A5, A3, small format?
Finally, I chose black and white for a very simple reason, because of the textures of wrinkled skin, which are much more visible in black and white than in colour. Then, once I knew how much space I would occupy in the gallery, I decided to print them on DIN-A4, because it allowed me to easily put the 20 photos chosen on a traditional grid of 4 x 5. The second part of the preparation was the order in which I would exhibit them. And here I had the ever-invaluable help of Miyuki, my wife, who helped me establish the sequence.
As always, the exhibition was held at Terranova House, which is located in the Yoyogi-Uehara neighborhood, close to Shinjuku. It is an old house of two floors, very well lit, with natural light and with open spaces that offer all kinds of possibilities for exhibitions.
And a small collection of the pictures of that very entertaining but busy week, I learned a lot from my exhibition partners, met very interesting people and at the same time I had the chance to spend some time with the friends who came to see it. Thanks to you all!
